Let’s Upgrade Our Van!

September 30, 2018

Today we tried to take a day of rest, but we both still had to get some work done. In the morning, Brett went into town to work on the business and I stayed behind to work on decontaminating all my supplement bottles.

I wiped each bottle twice using a wet washcloth and some EM-1. EM-1 is a soil probiotic that a number mold avoiders have successfully used to decontaminate possessions and living spaces. I’ve never tried it before but decided to experiment with it since there are a few things from our apartment that I’d rather not throw away.

As I was wiping down my supplements,  I was surprised to see just how many I’d accumulated while we were living indoors. When we were camping full-time, I didn’t need to take any supplements to feel okay. I felt so good that had no desire to be trying new treatments. I had three supplements and was only taking one (salt tablets because I was sweating a lot.)

As symptoms started popping up these last six months, I kept trying new things and adding more and more supplements. It’s funny how even after experiencing so much healing through the locations effect, I looked to supplements for help before considering my environment. Oops!

At this point, the only thing I’m planning to repurchase is the mineral kit. The mineral drops definitely help me. Everything else is debatable. I will use what I have and see if I feel any difference when I run out.

After I was done cleaning all the bottles, I left them out to dry and sat down to work on my writing. When Brett returned in the afternoon we were able to rest a little and talk about how we could improve the van set-up. We love our van but there are a few things that we’d like to change now that we’re going to be living in it for a while.

For example, we really don’t like having to take care of a cooler 24/7. We especially hate the process of freezing our hands off while we blindly dig through the ice and try to pull out the right food items. I’m happy to put up with a lot of inconvenience but the cooler is something that really gets to me.

We talked about getting a small camping fridge. To do that, we will need more solar panels which we probably already need anyway. The solar panels that came with our Goal Zero are tiny and charge the battery very slowly.

We also talked about whether there’s a way we could improve our shower set up. In the past, we had a large Rubbermaid tub in the van that we crouched in while we washed ourselves using large Arrowhead water bottles. We either had to heat the water on our propane stove (which took too long to be practical) or we had to have a power outlet to use our electric water heaters (they drained the Goal Zero way too quickly). We talked through the different camping shower options but didn’t reach any conclusions.

Since we don’t have cell reception at our campground we decided to drive into the city to research our options for refrigerators, power and showering. We found some solutions that seem pretty promising! I’m very excited!

By the way, Brett and I made a beautiful PDF of my favorite resources for suffering souls. I created the content and he made it look fancy with his superduper graphic design skills. Interesting about the supplements. I wanted to mention two products I’ve noticed but haven’t yet tried looking into solutions for power storage and the shower. One is these lithium batteries I saw on an Airstream trailer forum. They weigh much less than lead acid batteries and have several advantages over them, might be useful if you need to store a lot of power and want to be able to drain the battery all the way down without worrying about damaging it. https://battlebornbatteries.com/
And just in case you haven’t seen this solar shower that mounts on top of your van. https://roadshower.com/

Hi James! I’m sorry your comment got stuck in spam. Thank you for sharing this information with us.

Those batteries look intense! But that’s awesome how much power they can store.

Also, I was just looking at the road shower yesterday! Super cool! We decided to go for the cheaper solar showers but I’m definitely filing it away as a possibility in the future. It would be so handy. Not sure how we would attach it to the van. We don’t have a bike rack and I don’t want any holes in our roof.
