Day 103 | It Doesn’t Hurt to Ask

June 20, 2017

Well, my hopes for a better day did not exactly materialize. Brett worked while I slept all morning. Then in the afternoon we drove out to the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands to look for a primitive campsite. We found a place where we could camp but I didn’t feel very good there. So we decided to drive around the area some more but didn’t find anything better.

The Buffalo Gap National Grasslands are huge though and we debated whether we should try a different area of the grasslands altogether. But it was getting late, we had already spent hours driving and had barely eaten anything all day. We were exhausted and starving! We both voted for going into Rapid City to get some gluten-free pizza and trying a different approach to finding somewhere to camp.

The truck pull-out where we like to sleep when the campgrounds become intolerable is bordered by ranch-land on both sides. We’ve joked before about asking the cows whether we could stay on their land but this time Brett brought it up more seriously. “I think we should ask one of the ranchers if we could pay to camp on their land.” My family also mentioned the idea a couple days ago.

I wasn’t sure though. It seemed awfully bold to me and kind of embarrassing. Brett said he’d be willing to do all the talking. I wouldn’t even have to get out of the van. I was desperate enough to find a place with good air that I agreed. “I guess it doesn’t hurt to ask.”

So after we had gotten our food we headed to one of the ranches. When we arrived we found the entrance to a long driveway and saw a lady walking straight towards us down the lane. Brett got out of the van and started talking to her immediately.

All I could think was, “Oh my goodness, are we really doing this?! This is so humiliating!” I couldn’t even look in Brett’s direction. I stared at my phone and prayed with all my might. I was so nervous!

When Brett finally got back into the van he was smiling. He said the lady needed to talk with her husband but that he had a good feeling about it. He thought they would probably say yes. We just needed to meet with her husband tomorrow.

Okay. I guess a good feeling is better than nothing. This is so weird and awkward. I hope it works out.

By the way, Brett and I made a beautiful PDF of my favorite resources for suffering souls. I created the content and he made it look fancy with his superduper graphic design skills. That’s just what we do. When we could call some body about a problem I get embarrassed and he jumps up and says I’ll talk to them if you want. But after so many weird looks from people, it’s hard to get up my gumption. Watching him, I’m now often saying, no I’ll do it. Yea for Brett.. thanks! Patty
