Remember How Far I’ve Come

September 25, 2018

We spent the night in Red Rock Canyon and I felt great there! If you’ve been following my story from the beginning you might remember that on Day 8 we tried spending the night in Red Rock but had to flee in the middle of the night because I was breaking out in hives and my throat was starting to swell shut.

I’ve come such a long way! It’s been so comforting to realize that my reactivity hasn’t shot through the roof at all. I feel amazing at the campground and even feel quite well in Las Vegas. A year and a half ago it was almost impossible to get groceries in the city without breaking out in hives. And I wasn’t even going into the stores! It took a while for mold avoidance to finally turn down my mast cell issues and chemical sensitivities but it did!

Neglecting mold avoidance in an effort to resume normal life more quickly has led to a significant setback, but I’m not even close to back where I started! Seeing how well I do in Las Vegas has definitely bolstered my courage. Wellness is possible for me!

Today I went into countless leasing offices and most of them had those awful air fresheners you plug into the wall. I hate those contraptions exceedingly but I didn’t experience any hives or throat swelling. I also did laundry in a somewhat moldy hotel room. I doubt it was particularly toxic mold, but I wouldn’t have been able to do that a year ago. I haven’t lost my progress after all!

How encouraging to look back and seem improved symptoms! I can get very frustrated with my slow progress in recovery . . . but then I look back and compare my symptoms now with five or ten years ago, and I realize how for I’ve come. Healing is possible!

I’m passing through Las Vegas on Monday night (I too am moving for health reasons — to Albuquerque, where I believe the high elevation will help my Lyme symptoms) and will be thinking of you and hoping for your continued improvement.

It’s to true Lee Ann. It can be hard to recognize progress without looking back.

I hope the move to Albuquerque turns out to be really helpful and healing for you.
