Day 97 | The Family Arrives!

June 14, 2017

Our first night at the empty campground went well! I woke up feeling pretty good and got started on the day’s work right away. My family was scheduled to arrive today and there was a lot to do.

First I had to divide up their clean clothes into two outfits for each person. Then we had to pack all of their supplies into the van and head into town to buy water and paper towels for them to use when they decontaminate. Then we had to go to the airport to pick out a rental car for them to use while they’re here.

My family came all the way from NY in their minivan but they’re switching to a rental car to protect my immune system from any contamination the minivan might be carrying. Cars that have spent time in problematic locations can often have mold contamination in the hvac systems.

I was so nervous when we got to the airport. My previous experiences with finding uncontaminated rental cars haven’t exactly been fun.

Brett went into the building and explained our situation to the Hertz Rental employee. Then he came back out with a list of five cars that I could test.

He lead me to the first car and I poked my head in. It seemed quite decent. Wow! First try! That was easy! I still tried a few others just to be sure I had found the best one. Yep! The first one was definitely best.

While we were choosing we got a call from my family saying that they were in the area. We told them things weren’t quite ready for them to come yet. I wasn’t going to see them until they had all showered and changed into their new clothes.

So we quickly transferred my family’s supplies from our van into the rental car. Then we left so that they could come and decontaminate. The plan was that they would decontaminate at the airport and then go to the cabin to take full showers before coming to hang out with us. That way I could actually hug them all. It would be so hard to see them without hugging!

They needed a few things from the store and it was getting late so we offered to go for them. If you’ve been reading my blog you probably know the drill. Brett shops while I stay in the car. Then he brings things out for me to test and takes anything that feels contaminated back. It took a while but Team Harris got it done.

It was 7:40pm by now and my family was still at the airport decontaminating. My poor siblings and parents were probably having mold avoidance culture shock. They had to transfer all of their food into new bags and new coolers and they had to wash our dog, Ramona, in the middle of the parking lot. Then all four of them had to decontaminate and change before they could get into the rental car. They’re definitely brave souls to do all of that for their daughter and sister!

It was 9:00pm by the time they were finished and they still had to go to the cabin and shower! Sadly, I was feeling pretty worn out. I’ve had a lot of exposures in the last several days and I didn’t know if I could handle a late night. I was worried it might push me over the edge so we decided to save the big reunion for tomorrow. My family was really sweet about it.

I was disappointed we didn’t get to see them today but I’m glad we’re waiting until tomorrow. That way I’ll be at my strongest. I want them to see just how well I’m doing! I can’t wait!

By the way, Brett and I made a beautiful PDF of my favorite resources for suffering souls. I created the content and he made it look fancy with his superduper graphic design skills.
