Home Sweet Home?

September 1, 2017

Guess what? We made it back to “our” ranch in Rapid City! We slept at a Cabela’s parking lot just outside of Denver on Tuesday night and it went pretty well. They even had a security guard there all night. He came over to check on us and confirmed that it was perfectly fine for us to sleep there. It turns out a lot of Cabela’s stores allow overnight parking!

Then Brett got to see his twin brother who lives in Denver the next morning! That was a happy last-minute development! After that, we continued on our journey and finally made it to the ranch at about 8:30pm.

So far, I’m doing about as well as I expected but not as well as I’d hoped. The fatigue and pain levels have definitely come up a few notches. The smoke is even worse than it was before we left.

But hey! We have access to power, water, cell service and a refrigerator. That certainly helps to make daily life easier, even though Brett is having to do all the work for me.

I didn’t do much of anything yesterday besides resting but I was able to come up with a list of five possible rentals. I found their phone numbers and gave Brett the list so he could call each of them to find out if there’s been any history of water damage. Only two of the places said that they didn’t have a history of water damage, so we made plans to visit those two to start.

The thought of a real shower and a real kitchen is so unbelievably wonderful that I have to be careful not to let my hopes get carried away. I never realized how magical these modern conveniences really are until I had to live without them!

By the way, Brett and I made a beautiful PDF of my favorite resources for suffering souls. I created the content and he made it look fancy with his superduper graphic design skills. Glad you are back in a more stable place, despite the smoke. Reading your posts keeps me thankful and humble everyday, when I look around and see I have no right to grumble about low water pressure or slow internet, when at least I can have those kinds of problems. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about Proverbs 3:5-6, and reminding myself to trust the Lord in times of change and uncertainty. Continuing in prayer for you.

Please be cautious, Ana. Testing a home is best done when you are clear of toxins, which you are not. It is harder to detect reactions when you are already reacting. Follow all advice — lie down in the house. Spend a minimum of a few hours there, ideally overnight. Sign the shortest lease possible. Be sure landlord knows of your extreme sensitivities and try to arrange that you can get out of the lease if things get bad. Ask them not to use any cleaning products (or — disaster — use scented plug ins!) Above all, do not talk yourself out of that niggling feeling that something is wrong. Do not let your desire to have a home override your instinct.

*facepalm*. Now I am REALLY upset at stopping reading your blog for a little while! I live in Colorado too! I would have loved to have visited with you while you were here! Wow!
(I’m Christian and a Mold/CIRS/Lyme survivor too. And I have a couple friends who are survivors too! ๐Ÿ™‚ )

Huh. My email is [email protected]. If you happen to be in Colorado again, and you wanted to meet, you can email me! Blessings in Jesus name, Ann.
